Why a "21-inch" case is 22 inches tall
"21-inch" is the size class, measured on the shell. Add the spinner wheels and the top handle and the full height is about 22 inches. Airlines measure the whole bag, so use the full-height number.
Will it fit my airline?
Many US carriers publish a 22 x 14 x 9 in limit for carry-on bags, but that is not universal. Some airlines, especially on international routes and budget fares, set smaller dimensions or a weight cap. Basic fares can also exclude overhead-bin space altogether.
Reviews of hardside carry-ons, including ours, occasionally mention that the wheels make a 22-inch case snug in the overhead bin. If your airline's limit sits right at 22 inches, a full case may need to go in sideways or be gate-checked.
How to check in four steps
- Open your airline's baggage page and note the carry-on size and weight limits for your fare type.
- Measure your packed case at home, from the floor to the top of the handle, and across the widest and deepest points.
- Weigh it. A packed hardside carry-on is easy to take over a weight limit.
- If you are close to the limit, pack less in the case, or plan to check it.
Packing tips for a carry-on
- Keep the case closed and flat. Overstuffing makes the shell bulge and adds depth.
- Put heavy items near the wheels so the case stands steadily.
- Keep liquids and electronics you need at security in an outside bag or your underseat bag.
